I’m having trouble with my 2004 Yamaha Rhino 660. It’s been difficult to start lately, whether it’s cold, warm, or has been sitting for a few days. The engine takes several attempts to crank before it finally starts up. I’ve tried a few things on my own, but I’m not sure what’s causing this hard starting issue. Has anyone else experienced this problem or have any ideas on what might be wrong?

Hey there, it sounds like you might be dealing with a fuel system issue. Have you checked the fuel filter? If it’s clogged, it could be restricting fuel flow and making it tough for the engine to fire up. Also, a clogged fuel breather hose or deteriorated fuel could be the culprit. Sometimes, old or contaminated fuel can cause starting issues, especially if the engine has been sitting for a while. What have you already checked?
I had a similar problem with my Rhino. I would recommend checking the spark plugs next. If they’re fouled or worn out, they can make it hard for the engine to start. Make sure the spark plug gap is correct and that the electrodes aren’t worn down. Also, inspect the ignition coil and wires for any damage. A faulty spark plug cap or ignition coil could cause starting problems.
Another thing to consider is the carburetor. If the carb is dirty or the jets are clogged, it can cause difficulty starting. Check for any clogged pilot jets or air passages. Sometimes, the float or needle valve can also get stuck or become worn out. These issues can prevent the carburetor from delivering the right amount of fuel to the engine, making it hard to start.
Thanks so much for the suggestions! After considering all the advice, I decided to focus on the carburetor. I found that the pilot jet was clogged, and there was some dirt in the carburetor passages. After cleaning everything thoroughly and adjusting the fuel level, the Rhino now starts much more easily. It’s firing up quickly whether it’s cold or warm. Special thanks to Josesxntos for helping me pinpoint the carburetor issue. I really appreciate all the help from everyone here!
I’m glad to have this sorted out and will definitely keep an eye on the other components in case of future problems. Thanks again!
I agree with the other suggestions, but don’t overlook the air filter. A clogged air filter can restrict airflow and affect the air-fuel mixture, which might be causing your starting troubles. Also, verify that the battery is in good condition. A weak battery can sometimes cause intermittent starting issues.
